Launched in 1967, reference 1680 was the first Submariner to feature a date function and cyclopes magnifier to the crystal. As a tool watch, the vast majority were made in stainless steel, with only a handful produced each year in 18k yellow gold. At the time, reference 1680 was the only mainstream luxury divers watch produced in solid gold. Available with blue or black dials and bezel, the early examples displaying the depth rating in meters first followed by the equivalent in feet. Furthermore, the steel models featured the name of the model, Submariner in red, leading collectors to nickname the model “Red Submariner”.
