Reference 3878 was Patek Philippe's first automatic skeletonized wristwatch and was in production from 1981 until approximately 2007.During this production period, roughly 500 are thought to have been made. All of these watches were exclusively cased in 18k yellow gold, and displayed hand decorated and engraved skeletonized movements. Reference 3878 was later replaced by refernce 5180, and has since become a highly sought after and desirable collectors watch.
