Description

JEAN-BAPTISTE VANMOUR

LADY PLAYING AN ARCHLUTE

oil on canvas

12 1/8 by 9 3/8 in.; 30.8 by 23.8 cm

Vanmour built his career upon depicting the people and costumes of the Ottoman Empire during the peaceful "Tulip Era" and under the rule of Sultan Ahmed III. Figures such as the present lady playing an archlute were such popular subjects that Vanmour required a number of assistants to complete his commissions. His success in Constantinople earned him the title of Peintre Ordinaire du Roy en Levant in 1725.
