A Feathered Cape (‘ahu ‘ula), Hawaiian Islands, 18th century


Feathers, comprising domestic fowl, or moa (Gallus gallus), great frigate bird (Fregata minor), Hawaiʻi ʻoʻo (Moho nobilis), and ʻiʻiwi (Drepanis coccinea or Vestiaria coccinea), attached to netting of olona (Touchardia latifolia) fibre, the box in which the family stored this item with a label inscribed 'Captain Cook/Native Petticoat/given by him to'
