MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL IN FRENCH of over 1400 pages in 5 large volumes, folio (400 x 320mm.), ILLUSTRATED WITH c. 468 PHOTOGRAPHS by F. Bonfils, A. Mauri, G. Sommer, K. Dimitriou, F. Pelos, Zangaki, Photochrom Zürich, and others, mostly albumen prints and photochroms (average 200 x 260mm., or the reverse), with other prints, maps, newspaper cuttings and ephemera pasted in, contemporary green morocco gilt, spines in compartments gilt, upper covers with gilt initials "E.L.", some fading to photographs, mounts browned and brittle and chipped, occasional wear and tears, bindings rather rubbed
AN IMPRESSIVE PHOTOGRAPHICALLY ILLUSTRATED TRAVEL JOURNAL, the five large volumes containing photograph portraits and views in: 1. ITALY (Pisa, Rome, Pozzuoli, Sorrento, Capri, Pompeii, Brindisi); 2. GREECE (Corfu, Greek soldiers, portraits of women, port of Piraeus, Olympia, Athens, Mycenae, Corinth, Salamis); 3. ASIA MINOR and PALESTINE (Bethlehem, Bethany, Jericho, Jerusalem (Wailing Wall, Mosque of Omar); 4. EGYPT (Alexandria, Cairo, Giza); 5. SICILY and TUNISIA (Messina, Catania, Taormina, Etna, Agrigento, Palermo).
The author spent over two months travelling from 16 March to 23 May 1895 and describes in detail his journey and the places he visited. Of particular interest to the author were ancient Greek and Roman sites, Egyptian antiquities, and the city of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. In addition to the professional photographs, the volumes are additionally illustrated with many maps, plans, prints, newspaper cuttings, and photographs taken by the author.
