Pieter Nason is thought to have been a pupil of Nicolas Eliasz. Pickenoy and Jan van Ravensteyn in Amsterdam in circa 1632. The subjects of his paintings were invariably aristocratic patrons in elaborate dress; in this portrait, the sitter's status is evidenced by his embroidered white collar and cuffs, as well as the high-quality pair of leather gloves he holds.
Sabine Craft-Giepmans of the RKD endorses the attribution to Nason based on first-hand inspection, and suggests a likely date of 1661.
