Philipp de Hamilton was born in Brussels, and was the elder son of the Scottish painter James de Hamilton, under whom he studied. He was court painter in Vienna from 1705 onwards for Joseph I, Charles VI and Maria Theresa. Live birds are a common subject in his works, as seen here, and can be appreciated for their carefully rendered naturalistic details.
