Röell collection, The Netherlands.
Jan van Haensbergen was a pupil of Cornelis van Poelenburgh. In 1668 he was elected member of the painting Guild in Utrecht and started a successful career there as a portraitist. The sitter of the present work is unknown, but the handling of the figure is very comparable to that in the signed and dated portrait from 1680, which sold at Christie’s, Amsterdam, 13-14 May 2014, lot 34.
Eddy Schavemaker endorses the attribution to Haensbergen based on first-hand inspection.
