Shortly after his move from Bristol to London in 1835, James Baker Pyne became a sought-after landscape painter whose style often followed that of J.M.W. Turner in terms of colour and composition. This notion is illustrated by the present seascape depicting a view of the Cobb (the harbour wall), in Lyme Regis; the graduated tones of the sky and the rough, dynamic brushstrokes used to paint the crashing waves are reminiscent of Turner's work from circa 1840.
