Frederick Judd Waugh was predominantly a painter of seascapes - although this waterfall is unusual in his work, it displays no less drama and conveys the same sense and sound of crashing water as it cascades over the top and smashes onto the rocks below. The fact that he focuses on a relatively small area of the waterfall, rather than a wide-scale coastal view, gives this painting all the more atmospheric power.
