This extraordinary corner cabinet in two parts, is a rare survivor of its type and may well have been part of a long gone chinoiserie decorative architectural scheme. The rebate to each side suggests it may have been fitted into the panelling of a room. The association to Giles Grendey (b. 1693- d.1780) stems from large suite of scarlet-japanned furniture which was supplied by Grendey to the Duke of Infantado, Lazcano Palace, Spain. Comprising some 77 pieces including chairs, tables, mirrors, tripod stands, the suite also included several desks and bookcases and established him as a leading supplier of japanned furniture for the continental export market.
