PRINCE EDWARD, DUKE OF KENT
LETTER SIGNED, TO SIR JAMES COCKBURN,
forwarding two letters relating to a dispute within the administration of Gibraltar, expressing his confidence in Cockburn's ability to resolve the situation as "all that passed between us ... respecting Gibraltar must yet be fresh in your recollection", 3 pages, 4to, Kensington Palace, 21 October 1809;
[with:] two autograph letters signed by Colonel Wright, Secretary to the Governor of Gibraltar, to the Duke of Kent, 4 pages, 6-14 September 1809
Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn was appointed as the Governor of Gibraltar in 1802, a post he retained until his death. Sir James Cockburn, 9th Baronet (1771–1852) had worked with Kent when he was Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, in London, from 1806-1807. Sir James later served as Governor of Bermuda during the American War of 1812, in which the strategic position of Bermuda made the island an important final stop before British fleets sailed on to the war. He famously allowed privateers to attack vessels flying the American flag in Bermuda waters.
