A COLLECTION OF THREE LETTERS SIGNED BY NAVAL COMMANDERS OF THE NAPOLEONIC WARS


i) de Villeneuve, Pierre de Silvestre, letter signed ("Villeneuve"), as Chief of the Navy of "Armée d'observation du Midi", with a seven-line autograph postscript signed, to Le Roy in Alexandria, informing him that the French control the ports of Taranto, Otranto and the Adriatic, but that he has no news to impart about the disposition of the English, following their arrival at Aboukir, in French, 3 pages, folio, printed stationery of the "Marine militaire" with engraved vignette, Taranto, 11 May 1801


ii) Johnstone Hope, Vice-Admiral Sir William, autograph letter signed, to Lady Popham, assuring her that he has left a note for Lord Melville supporting her son's application for promotion, 4 pages, 8vo, no place or date, watermarked ("WW 1822")


iii) Missiessy, Edouard-Thomas Burgues, comte de (Vice-Admiral and reformer of Napoleon's navy), letter signed, in which he discusses Napoleon's recent promotion of ten lieutenants, deploring the fact that several very competent officers that he recommended have been passed over, in French, 3 pages, folio, on board the boat "Le Charlemagne", 16 July 1811
