Description
ALLENBY, GENERAL EDMUND
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, TO "MY DEAR LEADER"
from "my railway Train, on the Palestine front", describing the scenery and agrarian economy of Palestine ("...It is a fertile country but water is scarce. After the Spring rains it is covered with grass, barley & flowers of all sorts; now it is dry & dusty. Figs abound, & dates; & grapes are fairly common..."), and discussing the intentions of the Turks ("...The Turk is well dug in, under German instruction, and his positions are strong..."), 4 pages, 8vo, headed stationery of Egyptian State Railways, 30 July 1917
AN EXCEPTIONAL LETTER FROM THE LIBERATOR OF JERUSELM ON ARRIVAL IN PALESTINE.
General Allenby took command of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in June 1917. The months that followed saw a series of successes and on December 11 Allenby entered Jerusalem as conqueror, but did so on foot, as a sign of respect for the city's holy nature. This was followed by victory at Megiddo in September of the following year, and the eventual capturing of Damascus and Aleppo, effectively ending the Ottoman power in greater Syria.
