AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT MAP OF THE EASTERN PROVINCES OF CAPE COLONY ("TRANSKEIAN PROVINCES")


ink and wash, showing the provinces of Transkei, Tambookieland, Griqualand East, and Pondoland, with principal settlements, also noting tax receipts, expenditure (including on telegraphs and education), and populations, endorsed by Gordon on the verso, bifolium (33 x 40.5cm), signed and dated, 11 August 1882


Gordon had been promoted to Major General on 23 March 1882. He transferred to Cape Colony where he was tasked with reorganising the troops but also involved himself in wider administrative affairs, especially relating to the native population.
