THE BEATLES
PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF ALL FOUR BEATLES WITH SYLVIE VARTAN, SIGNED BY ALL FIVE
showing Vartan seated on an amplifier backstage at the Cinema Cyrano, Versailles, France, holding Paul's bass guitar, with all four Beatles standing behind, photograph by Alistair MacDonald of the Daily Mirror, 205 x 125mm, 15 January 1964, inscribed by Vartan ("Votre amie Sylvie") in black marker, signed by all four Beatles in blue ballpoint on 17 January 1964
[with:] Scan of a typed note by the photographer ("...The night before they played at the Olympic Paris (16th) they played outside the city at the Cadillac in Versailles. On stage before them was Sylvie Vartan. This print was a thrown out wire print. The best print was sent to London. (The prints were wrapped around a rotating drum, scanned, and sent by telephone.) Back stage at the Olympia I got Slvia [sic] to sign the print and had a lot of trouble trying to prevent her keeping it. The following day at the George V hotel I visited the Beatle's [sic] rooms I think for a small press conference about the show and got them to sign it...")
The Beatles's first night in France was spent at a small venue in Versailles as a warm-up for their residency at the Olympia in Paris, which ran from 16 January to 4 February 1964. They topped a bill that also included Vartan and Trini Lopez.
