Acquired directly from the artist by the parents of the present owner

Hermann Scherer trained as a stonemason and 1910-19 worked with other sculptors in Basel. By 1919-20 his conversion to painting was complete and he destroyed many of his early works. Important early influences were Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, with whom he stayed near Davos and the works of Edvard Munch, which he saw in a 1922 exhibition at the Kunsthaus, Zurich. Scherer co-founded the Rot-Blau group at the end of 1924 in Mendrisotto together with Paul Camenisch (see lot 48) and Albert Müller. Aiming to make a clean break with the past, the artists often favoured the primarily colours of red and blue. They exhibited together in April 1925 at the Basel Kunstverein and at the Kunsthaus Zurich in 1926. The bright colours and dynamic forms of the present landscape are typical of Scherer’s expressionistic style.

The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the SIK-ISEA no 85225.
