Leitner, Vienna, from who acquired by Ing. Viktor Baerlocher, Vienna in the 1930s, thence by descent

The third son of Empress Maria Theresia and Emperor Francis I, Leopold II (1747-92) was Grand Duke of Tuscany 1765-90, Archduke of Austria, King of Hungary and Bohemia, and Holy Roman Emperor 1790-92. During his lifetime he was portrayed by several well-known painters such as Anton Raphael Mengs and Pompeo Batoni, but the painter of the present portrait, which shows Leopold II as a young boy, has yet to be identified.
