An Italian silver salt-cellar shaped as a well, maker's mark MN? and a cross, Venice, 17th century
octagonal-shaped resting on four kneeling bearded men, the panels embossed with strapwork on matted ground around four medallions with eagles and flowers, the upper part shaped has four females holding a shell in the left hand and supporting the pierced dome, the finial shaped has Neptune riding a dolphin and holding a sort of stick in the right hand

de forme octogonale, reposant sur quatre pieds représentant un homme barbu agenouillé, les panneaux repoussés de rinceaux sur fond amati entourant des médaillons représentant un aigle ou une fleur, la partie haute ornée de 4 personnages féminins drapés tenant une coquille de la main gauche et soutenant de la main droite un dôme ajouré de rinceaux, la prise en forme de Neptune chevauchant un dauphin et tenant de la main droite une sorte de bâton

This salt-cellar is engraved with the arms of the Valier family (alias Valiero or Vallieri) of Venice, originally from Adria. This family gave two doges and two cardinals. This piece was probably made before 1694 for Silvestro Valier who was born and died in Venice (1630-1700). He was the 109th Doge of Venice elected in 1694. His father Bertuccio Valier was doge from 1656 to 1658.
The kneeling figures are found on a gilded bronze salt-cellar made in Venice in the second half of the 16th century. It is part of the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and is illustrated in Piero Pazzi, Introduzion al collezionismo di argenteria civile e metalli veneti antichi (sec. XII-XVIII), 1993.
Neptune and the shells are found in a salt-cellar in a private Venetian collection in gilt-bronze and silver, illustrated on p.90 in Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, L'oro di Venezia, Oreficerie argente gioielli di Venezia e delle città venete, 1996

Cette salière est aux armes de la famille Valier (alias Valiero ou Vallieri) de Venise, originaire d'Adria. Cette famille donna deux doges et deux cardinaux. Cettepièce a probablement été réalisée avant 1694 pour Silvestro Valier né et mort à venise (1630-1700). Il est le 109e doge de Venise élu en 1694. Son père Bertuccio Valier fût doge de 1656 à 1658.
Les personnages agenouillés se retrouvent sur une salière en bronze doré faite à Venise dans la deuxième moité du XVIe siècle. Elle fait partie des collections du Victoria and Albert Museum de Londres et est illustrée dans Piero Pazzi, Introduzion al collezionismo di argenteria civile e metalli veneti antichi (sec. XII-XVIII), 1993.
