Sayre Gomez’s multi-disciplinary practice includes painting, sculpture, installation, and artist’s books. He often employs found images and text as a means of meditating on the ambiguity inherent in communication and all manners of personal exchange. His works are characterized by a formalism that has been influenced by both graphic and typographic design, along with the use of repetition that frequently turns to a form of abstraction. Often the texts and images Gomez engages are culled from various blogs and archives, selected purely for their formal qualities.
Sayre Gomez (b. 1982, Chicago, USA) holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Recent solo exhibitions include François Ghebaly, Los Angeles and Nagel-Draxler, Cologne, with prominent group exhibitions at the Yuz Museum, Shanghai; the Taubman Museum of Art, Roanoke; Gagosian Gallery & Jeffrey Deitch, Miami and Perrotin, New York. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Arsenal Contemporary, Montréal; and the Rubell Family Collection, Miami. He lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA.
