William J. O’Brien’s practice incorporates paintings, drawings, sculpture, and fiber work among other media. He is known for his investigations into deeply personal influences including the spiritual, the familial, and the romantic. His works are often pattern-driven, derived from motifs expressive of the cyclical processes of life, and contain acts of visible repetition. These ritual interventions by the artist’s hand imbue the final object with a sense of sacredness indicative of O’Brien’s intuitive process.
Recent exhibitions of William J. O’Brien’s work include those at Taka Ishi Gallery, Tokyo; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Almine Rech Gallery, Paris; and Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Drawing Center, New York; Green Gallery, Milwaukee; and Witte de With, Rotterdam.
