Alina Szapocznikow is remembered as one of the most significant post-war figurative artists; her distinctively radical hybrids of the organic and inorganic deconstruct and reframe the tenants of traditional figurative art. Often working from direct impressions and casts of limbs including her own, Szapocznikow fixes the traces of the body, employing a diverse array of media to capture the essence of physical being––from industrial tinted polyester resin and polyurethane foam to common domestic items including pantyhose, newspaper clippings, and grass.
Recent solo exhibitions of Szapocznikow’s work have been held at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany; Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York; and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Musée des beaux-arts de Rennes, France; the Met Breuer, New York; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA. As such, Sotheby’s will share the contact details for the winning bidders with the SCA so that they may be in touch directly post-sale.
