Whitney Bedford’s practice is firmly rooted in the art historical relationship between painting and the American landscape. Bedford often addresses the terrain in the vicinity of her adopted Los Angeles through acts of graphic isolation and chromatic intervention, rendering familiar terrain in hauntingly unfamiliar terms. Drawing on her interests in phenomenology, historical theories of the sublime, and the transpositional qualities of the fulcrum of visible horizon lines, Bedford’s work simultaneously captures the beauty and the brutality of the modern natural world.
Recent solo exhibitions of Bedford’s work include those at Vielmetter, Los Angeles; Carrie Secrist, Chicago; and Starkwhite Gallery, Auckland. Her work has been included in group shows at Miles McEnery, New York; Saatchi Gallery, London; and Over the Influence, Los Angeles.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA.
