For over four decades, Gaylen Gerber’s practice has been characterized by the fusion of his own work (often through the use of chromatically and culturally neutral colors) with that of another, rendering the works inseparable but equally present. The resultant narrative tension renews the relation between what is presented and how it is presented to underscore the complexity of exchanges between an artwork and its reception.
Recent solo exhibitions of Gerber’s work include those at the Arts Club of Chicago, Chicago; Galerie Emanuel Layr, Rome; and the Renaissance Society, Chicago. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museé d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg; and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA. As such, Sotheby’s will share the contact details for the winning bidders with the SCA so that they may be in touch directly post-sale.
