Claes Oldenburg’s prolific career spanning over fifty years has made him known for his oversized pop reconstructions of everyday domestic objects. Notable for his early works of “soft sculpture” as much as his large-scale public art installations, Oldenburg has made a radical contribution to the history of sculpture by rethinking its material, form, and subject matter.
Recent exhibitions of Oldenburg’s work include those at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Pulitzer Art Foundation, St. Louis; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Together with his late wife Coosje van Bruggen, Oldenburg has executed more than forty large-scale projects which have been sited in various urban settings in Europe, Asia, and the United States.
