Derrick Adams’ critically admired work spans painting, collage, sculpture, performance, video, and sound installations. His multidisciplinary practice engages the ways in which individuals’ ideals, aspirations, and personae become attached to specific objects, colors, textures, symbols, and ideologies. His work examines questions of how African American experiences intersect with art history, American iconography, and consumerism.
Recent solo exhibitions of Adams’ work include those at The Gallery, Baltimore; Museum of Arts and Design, New York; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver. His work has been included in shows at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati; The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; and MoMA PS1, New York.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA.
