Maren Hassinger is known for her labor-intensive sculptures, site-specific installations, and ambitious performances that examine situational dynamics. Over the course of a career spanning more than four decades, She has consistently infused her work with a sense of humanity, calling on her personal experiences as an African-American woman, while reflecting on the wider African-American experience in the United States, both historically and in the present day. Hassinger consistently commands deft control over material, as is the case with Rivers (2007), wherein the artist’s handwriting embodies a repetitive gesture that is both mediative and incantatory.
Recent solo exhibitions of Hassinger’s work include those at Boca Raton Museum of Art, Florida; Tiwani Contemporary, London; and Susan Inglett Gallery, New York. Hassinger’s work has also been included in exhibitions at Morán Morán, Los Angeles; Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston.
