Tom Burr's sculptures and installations function both as deep investigations of form, site, and material, and as figures. Burr's explorations of formal inquiry, character development, and site-specificity are deliberately entwined, with no form treated as autonomous or free from reference. His treatment of common (often domestic or industrial) objects on which he draws as a starting point openly admits their historical, discursive, and contextual baggage.
Recent solo exhibitions of Burr’s work include those at Auroras, São Paulo; Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford; and Maureen Paley, London. His work has been included in exhibitions at Whitechapel Gallery, London; ArkDes, Stockholm; and the Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington, Seattle.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA. As such, Sotheby’s will share the contact details for the winning bidders with the SCA so that they may be in touch directly post-sale.
