Tony Cokes’ video and installation works examine the subjective and objective experiences associated with the social and political constructs of his time. His conceptual basis is informed by contemporary cultural studies, poststructuralist theory, and the vernacular language of popular culture. His works frequently incorporate and synthesize archival footage, film stills, text commentary, voiceovers, and music.
Recent solo exhibitions of Cokes’ work include Volume I of a multi-volume run of exhibitions at Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art, London, as well as exhibitions at the Tate Modern, London; and The Shed, New York. His work has also been included in recent shows at MoMA PS1, Long Island City; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA. As such, Sotheby’s will share the contact details for the winning bidders with the SCA so that they may be in touch directly post-sale.
