Paul Mpagi Sepuya is widely recognized for his first monograph, “Beloved Object & Amorous Subject, Revisited” as well as his active participation and collaboration within the re-emergence of the queer zine culture of the early 2000s. Sepuya’s work examines the constructed and manipulated aspects of photography as a documentary medium, and the performative aspects of the photographer’s studio as place.
Recent solo exhibitions of Sepuya’s work include museum surveys at CAM-STL, St. Louis and Blaffer Art Museum, Houston; and solo exhibitions at FOAM Fotomuseum, Amsterdam and Document, Chicago. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Getty Museum, Los Angeles; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Sepuya was selected for inclusion in the 2019 edition of the Whitney Biennial.
