Shahryar Nashat’s sculptures explore what it means to be a body at a moment when the technologies that filter experience encourage fragmentation and distance. Often altering a gallery’s architecture and lighting, Nashat allows his exhibitions to function as fully embodied meditations on desire, mortality, fragility, and resilience. Through spatial explorations that extend into the siting of his work, Nashat probes modes of access, regulation, and conditioning between an eye and the body it comprehends.
Solo exhibitions of Nashat’s work include those at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen; and Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the 54th Venice Biennale; and Centre Pompidou, Paris.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA.
