Candida Alvarez is a painter known for her complex and vibrantly layered works that unite abstract and figurative forms. Rich in pop, historical, and modern art references, Alvarez incorporates global events and personal memories alike. Her works display, in turn, a fascination with the aesthetics of the cartoonish, the kitsch, and the hand-crafted, incorporating materials as diverse as fabric, acrylic, enamel, galkyd, and vellum.
Recent solo exhibitions of Alvarez’s work include those at Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago; Gavlak, Palm Beach; and Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the DePaul Art Museum, Chicago; Kemper Museum, Kansas City; and Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA. As such, Sotheby’s will share the contact details for the winning bidders with the SCA so that they may be in touch directly post-sale.
