This exceptionally large intaglio follows John Flaxman's beautiful drawing of Hector Chiding Paris. Flaxman produced the drawing as part of his famous illustrations of Homer's Illiad, commissioned by Georgina Hare-Naylor whilst the artist was living in Rome. Flaxman's sketch, dating to 1792-1793, is in the Royal Academy of Arts (inv. no. 03/3219). However, the present intaglio closely follows the engraving by Tommaso Piroli (circa 1752-1824) for the illustrated edition which was originally published in Rome in 1793 and subsequently published in London by Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme in 1805 (copy in the Royal Academy of Arts, inv. no. 18/322). The quality of the present intaglio is very high and recalls the work of Edward Burch (circa 1730-1814). It is likely that the present carving was engraved in England circa 1805.
