An English gentleman hunts the West - and the world

John Evelyn Mardon was a high-ranking administrator in the India Service and an enthusiastic hunter and photographer. The first region (near Nepal) depicted in the present album was the immediate vicinity for which he had responsibility. The images from Uttarakhand region includes village and temple scenes as well as striking landscape views (in fact, the photographer retained an eye for the surrounding country throughout his travels). The majority of the images herein (just over 100) detail a Yellowstone trip near Jackson Hole for antelope, followed by a winter moose hunt in New Brunswick, and a trip to Turkey. Mardon presented photographs from his expeditions to the Royal Geographical Society (no doubt the images of Central Asia were of particular use during the era of the Great Game).
