Chupícuaro Figure

Late Preclassic, circa 300 - 100 BC

Height: 8 1/8 in (20.5 cm)

Gordon Schmidt
Gray and Patsy R. Taylor, Greenwich, acquired from the above in July, 1971
The repeated step-fret designs characteristic of the Chupícuaro figures is a specific type of symbolic body art. It is suggested the design is a form of the quincunx, the four-part emblem symbolic of the cardinal directions. This figure has a markedly rotund belly, perhaps symbolic of pregnancy, a smooth rounded head and ears pierced for ornaments.
