Similarly to fellow French artist Jean-François Millet, Lhermitte was deeply committed to French working class imagery, often characterised by a somewhat raw quality in stark contrast with the fine execution. Weavers were a common subject for Lhermitte. He often depicted the poor working conditions of these men and women, forced to work long hours in underground cellars with no sunlight.
