Monsieur Auguste worked as a clown at the famous Cirque Fernando in Paris. The Cirque opened in Montmartre in 1875 and attracted big crowds, including artists of the time. Two young acrobats of the cirque are the subject of Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 1879 Acrobats at the Cirque Fernando (The Art Institute of Chicago).
