The present pair of leaping carp are unusual in having later added iron-red decoration. A pair with typical underglaze-blue decoration with red and green enamels, is illustrated in John Ayers, Oliver Impey, J.V.G. Mallet, Porcelain for Palaces: The Fashion for Japan in Europe 1650-1750, London, 1990, cat. no. 179. A single example, mounted in 19th century French ormolu, was sold in our London rooms, October 25, 2016, lot 58.
