This American film was directed by Richard Donner, and was his directional debut. It was narrated by James Stewart, and stars David McLean, Charles Bronson and Mary Tyler Moore. The film is a fictionalised story of the North American X-15 - a hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft, which was part of the US Air Force and NASA's X-plane series of experimental aircraft. In 1967 the X-15 reached the edge of outer space, and broke altitude and speed records. The data gathered from this programme was used in the design of aircraft and spacecraft.
