The Holy Family with Saint Catherine of Alexandria is a version of a composition by Jacopo Bassano previously known only from four workshop canvases: one offered at the Dorotheum, Vienna, 24 April 2018, lot 193 (incorrectly described as a Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine); another on the London art market in 1955; a third in a German private collection; and a fragment featuring only the central figures, with Agnew's London in 1944. Jacopo Bassano was one of the most important and original painters working in Venice in the sixteenth century, and at its best, his work places him alongside his great contemporaries such as Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto. Trained by his father Francesco, Jacopo took over the family workshop in 1539 and built up a very successful business which eventually included his four sons, all of whom produced work in a similar manner to their father.
