This painting depicts the semicircular terrace of the Villa Melzi, a neoclassical residence near Bellagio on Lake Como, built between 1808-1810 for Francesco Melzi d'Eril, Vice President of the Cisalpine Republic. Many illustrious guests have stayed at the villa, including Franz Liszt and Stendhal. The villa, which still stands, is a national monument open to the public.
