Guillam Du Bois was born in Haarlem where he joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1646. His paintings were influenced by Ruysdael and created a keen sense of atmosphere. The shadow casted from the darker clouds and foliage on the figures in the foreground is contrasted by the ray of sunlight that beams through the center of the path, which romanticizes this idyllic landscape. This painting stylistically relates to Du Bois's works from circa 1650.
When this painting sold in 2012, it had a 1947 certificate signed by Max J. Friedlander who attributed it to Jacob van Ruysdael (see Provenance).
