Painted on the artist's preferred medium of millboard for life-room studies, this work almost certainly started as a study from a life model in the Academy, with the landscape setting added later. Typical of Etty’s nude studies is the way the artist allows the extremity of a limb, in this case the woman’s right foot, to be cut by the edge of the support. The painting may be compared with a slightly larger Reclining female nude in landscape at York Art Gallery of circa 1830–35.1
