Please note that this painting is by Sebastiano Conca (see Cataloguing).

Collection of the Counts of Portalegre;

Private collection, Madrid.

This canvas is most likely a modello for the signed painting by Conca1 in the Chiesa di S. Matteo, Pisa, which forms part of a series of paintings of scenes from the life of the Saint, including works by Francesco Trevisani, Marco Benefial and Jacopo Zoboli.2 Conca’s drawing for the composition is recorded in the Gabriel Huquier sale in Paris, 9 November 1772, lot 88: ‘Un Saint massacré à l’autel.’
