Carl Otto Fey (1894-1971), the artist, Düsseldorf and Altenkirchen;
Thence by descent.
These portraits are loosely based on those in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. nos 44491 and 44502), which are similarly associated with the work of the Master of the Magdalen Legend, an early Netherlandish painter active at the turn of the 16th century.1
Philip was Archduke of the House of Habsburg. He married Joanna, Queen of Castile from 1504 and of Aragon from 1516, in 1496. Philip became King of Castile in 1506, bringing the Habsburg rule to the Spanish kingdoms, but died in the same year. Joanna was declared insane and imprisoned by her father, Ferdinand II of Aragon (1452-1516), who ruled as regent until his death, and though nominally co-monarch with her son Charles I, later Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (1500-58), Joanna remained imprisoned until the end of her life.
