B. Common Elliot;

By descent to his granddaughter.

The composition shows five frigates whose crew struggle to trim their sails against the strength of the storm. Brooking treats the ships and the elements as subjects through which to express the drama and power of the sea as the ships attempt to right themselves in the storm. The presence of an officer bravely transferring ships in the near foreground, about to be engulfed by the threatening waves, heightens the sense of drama and pathos.

Proudly displayed in the boardroom of the shipping company Common Brothers of Newcastle, this particular scene would have been a clear reminder to those present of the precarious nature and frequent perils of shipping at sea.
