This work almost certainly originated as a life-room study of a female model. Typical of his nude studies is the way Etty allows the extremities of limbs to touch or even be cut by the edge of the support.
Etty was particularly fond of Venus and Cupid as a theme. The present picture may be compared with his versions of the subject at York Art Gallery (probably exhibited at the British Institution in 1830);1 and the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Bournemouth.2
