From the album of drawings by Stefano della Bella formed by Thomas Tomkins (1743-1816) and sold, London, Mr Hickman's Gallery, 25-28 February 1818, lot 289, bt. Holroyd;

Robert Holford,

thence by descent to Sir George Holford,

his sale, London, Sotheby's, 22 May 1928, lot 29 B (the whole album);

sale, London, Christie's 18 March 1975, part of lot 30;

with Bernard Houthakker, Amsterdam;

Private Collection, Belgium

Stefano della Bella was a prolific draughtsman and became one of the most admired printmakers of the seventeenth century.  His interest and passion for sketching outdoors is demonstrated by the number of drawings by him that survive. His delicate and minute style of drawing is carefully translated into his prints, giving his etchings an incredible sense of lightness and spontaneity.

For a full discussion of the album formed by Thomas Tomkins see the introduction to the 1975 sale catalogue (see Provenance).
