Although the previous attribution to Adam Elsheimer is untenable, this intriguing and highly unusual drawing does seem to originate from the early 17th century Roman expatriate milieu in which Elsheimer worked, alongside Dutch contemporaries such as the Pynas brothers, and Leonard Bramer.
The subject also eludes definitive identification, but Elizabeth McGrath and Paul Taylor of the Warburg Institute have kindly told us that they believe it to be an allegory, rather than a specific myth.
