RECTO: THE HOLY FAMILY WITH ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

VERSO: TWO STUDIES OF A BEARDED MAN LOOKING DOWN


Pen and brown ink (recto), with black chalk (verso);

bears a number of inscriptions and numberings on the verso, in pen and brown ink: BACn24, Devon (?) and 18 and also bears later inscription and date in black chalk: Travies (?) 1670

204 by 210 mm, octagonal shape

Stylistically, the handling of the pen and ink in this charming study is reminiscent of the work of the Genoese artist, Bartolomeo Biscaino. A comparable drawing, depicting the same subject as the present sheet, is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.1
